I’ve been working my butt off for the past several days so I haven’t been able to respond to any of the TV guide article/ensuing craziness in the WH13 tag. I don’t want to add yet another post about it (especially since I watch this show for me and me alone..) But I do want to say this because I…

I’ve been waiting for someone to post about this, mostly because I’ve been holding back on the subject myself.  Without going into the reasons for why I am not fond of Pete/Myka getting together, I do want to reiterate your point about the heteronormative aim of the media.

I like women.  I also happen to like men.  For me, the actual representations of my life - and the ability to connect with characters as a result of it - are RIDICULOUSLY slim. 

What are my current choices?  Bo from Lost Girl?  Yes, I can see myself identifying with a succubus - which is just the supernatural way of calling the bisexual a slut.  Oh, or what about… hrm… wait… oh, that’s right.  There aren’t any other shows.

There was once H.G. Wells, but she was a bleeding psychopath.  If you can look past that she is the most recent bisexual character who isn’t openly and clearly promiscuous (although the writers made sure we knew she had been). 

Before her there was Dr. Remy “Thirteen” Hadley from House.  Other than the one episode where we find her spiraling out of control due to control issues over her terminal illness, she is THE ONLY representation of a quality bisexual character who is not pulled out straight-ville for sweeps week and then put back in the closet again - nor is she sleeping with someone new every other day. 

When is the last time you witnessed a bisexual character who entered into a loving relationship with either a man or a woman without it being either a) gratuitous, b) a sign of her promiscuity, or c) a method for her to be manipulative for some nefarious purpose?  For me, I WANT H.G. and Myka together not just because it’s hot or awesome or whatever - I want it because of how the characters have played that relationship.

It is love.  It is not hormonal physicality.  It is something emotional and deep that transcends the gratuitous.  It is the kind of REAL emotion that most of us either have felt ourselves or want to feel.  If they never show them engaging physically I would be fine - so long as we get to know they will continue to love one another as hopelessly and helplessly as they do.

It is one of the biggest things I loved about the introduction of H.G. - that Myka does not see her as “another female friend”.  She sees her for WHO she is, and she fell in love with that person.  The gender issue did not matter to how she felt.  What she does with those feelings may be another matter, but her love was unconditional, and I adore that.

Maybe H.G. will return, and maybe not, but the last thing I think I could tolerate at this point is for the Myka I know and love to end up in any sort of stereotype.  I just don’t think I could handle that.

Thanks for bringing up the topic of the LGBTQ community.  Let us hope the respect they have shown us continues.

(A little off W13 topic) I totally get what you’re saying and I agree with most of it. You are so right that bisexuals (also pansexuals, queers, etc.) are not only underrepresented in the media - there are barely any of them at all. I don’t want to be obnoxious or be nit picking but, I think it’s unfair to characterize one of the very few examples of characters with a fluid sexuality as a slut.  Lost Girl should be applauded for their depiction of a character that not only doesn’t feel the need to apologize for not being heterosexual, she doesn’t need to apologize for having sex a lot.   You may not connect with her, but just because she has a lot of casual sex doesn’t mean she’s not a quality bisexual character.

Sometimes I secretly lurk on tumblr not doing much other than refreshing and checking to see if the fanfic I’m invested in at the time has been updated. This leads to me being awake with nothing to show for it at 3am… bad life choices.
